The Politically constrained and mentally challenged United States Congress
has shown themselves unable to put forth solutions for the Energy
Crisis---Let's help them. 1) Regulate speculators in the petroleum futures market. With true supply and demand forces at work, gasoline should run about $2.25 a gallon 2) Impose government oversight to prevent catastrophic futures crude prices in the marketplace. Oil is a National Strategic Resource and should be regulated by the Government-not speculators 3) Develop Diesel Electric for big rigs. It works for Locomotives and Submarines 4) More efficient use of the United States Postal Service vehicle fleet. USPS (a/o 30 Sep 07) has 219,522 vehicles 195,211 vehicles are ½ to 2 ½ ton trucks used to deliver mail six days a week. Cutting non-business deliveries from 6 days to three (@15 gal vehicle per day) could save approximately 3,000,000 gallons of gas and reduce costs by $12,000,000.00 per week In one year, savings would be 156,000,000 gallons 5) Speed Kills-fuel economy. We need to reduce National speed limits to 60 MPH for all vehicles using the Interstate system 6) National diesel subsidy for both large companies and independents should be developed. Subsidies should reduce prices by at least 20% for both long haul truckers and local distributors 7) The Department of Energy should expand the rewards for companies involved in research and start-up concerns where renewable energy is their primary product, or where the increased efficiency of currently available energy is a factor 8) Mandatory use of mass transit systems, such as those employed in England and other parts of Europe and Japan should start to be employed in the United States 9) The Department of Education should encourage, in the strongest terms, all state schools to delay start-dates until the Second Monday in September The savings on Air Conditioning and fuel costs would be enormous. Speed limits on all school buses should be set no higher than 55 10) The GSA should require all government buildings thermostats be set no lower than 78 degrees from June through September and no higher than 70 degrees from October through May. They should also terminate all utility services for vacant government buildings when determined safe to do so 11) Increase the conversion of trucks and automobiles to burn both gasoline and Propane Gas 12) Traffic controls could be changed without increasing safety concerns: Cities could reduce the number of stop lights and reset the timing to facilitate legal speed limit traffic flow Push companies to stagger working hours to reduce traffic on the freeways 13) Do away with Daylight Savings Time. Studies have already shown that this is costly in terms of energy use 14) Encourage all institutions to reduce the number of elective night time activities to conserve electricity 15) All National Sports organizations that usually perform outside at night should be encouraged to present their games during daylight hours 16) Strongly encourage cities to reduce excessive, or unneeded street and building lighting after most business activities have stopped 17) Limit 24/7 operations that are basically nothing but electricity users, such as fast food and "Big Box" stores. Conversion to 18/7 operations should work 18) Nothing says loving like saving gas and money by using car pools 19) We use school buses to get children to work-buses will work equally well at the Corporate and bureaucratic worker level. Vans for small companies. 20) A 4 day (10 hour per day) work-week saves 20% of the fuel and other energy expended. Savings would conservatively be in the billions of dollars and hundreds of millions in gallons of gasoline 21) Wind generators mounted behind the grill of automobiles could serve to recharge batteries without burning fuel as the vehicles were being driven 22) Where conducive, allowing employees to work from home has already proven to be a highly efficient (and economical) way to run a business 23) Teleconference, web conference and even e-mail conferences are easy, economical and efficient. Email conferencing even provides exact and complete meeting minutes for all participants 24) Develop wind generators mounted on reefer trailers, or cabs of 18 wheelers to provide power to batteries that run cooling units instead of relying on gas and diesel engines to provide the refrigeration. Fuel would only be required for long down times 25) Expanded domestic, including the Artic National Wildlife Area, and off-shore drilling until sufficient sources of renewable energy can be developed |
