The IFMA
IFMA-Austin Association
Speaker. The real reason for
the great turn out was the Holland Young's speech on the new airport. He has been the
planner since 1992. Since it was going to cost the city 1.6 Billion to enlarge Robert Mueller in 1986, spending 680
million to convert Bergstrom AFB was a good deal. So far, he is under budget, but expects to spend all the money
before it's over. The city cost is 585 million with the rest being spent by vendors. With the exception of last years
growth, the average growth for boarding passengers has been over 6%. The expected number is 3.1 million
passengers and 6 million users per year. Cargo growth is about 3 times the national average. The new runways are
12,000 feet and 9,000 feet compared to Mueller's length of 7000. The old SAC 12,000-foot runway was 300 feet wide.
It has been cut to 150 feet to conform to the FAA standards. Pilots tend to chop the power when the windscreen fills
up with runway. When landing on a 300-foot wide runway, you would be higher in the air, which upsets the
stewardesses. There are 25 gates at the new airport compared
with 16 at the old. There's room for 55 gates. The 2000
parking spaces are about double the old number. The prices for food are supposed to be within 10% of the street price.
To reduce the peak electrical consumption during the day, they store chilled water in a large thermal storage tank. The
eye level of the people in the tower is 207 feet. There were 481 hazardous waste sites on the property and it took 55
million to correct them.
The current plan for the old airport is for state office buildings and for a city development. Holland still expects to be
ready for business on 2 May. In January, 84 of the 139 contracts were complete and the remaining projects were 82%
complete.
The two weekends before the opening will be open houses.

HAPPY ST. PATTY'S DAY
The need to develop people is a challenge. Many of the books that are published always provide insight into what makes a good leader. The common theme is that the true leaders are the people that surface when the need arises. This is very evident in sports. Ask any coach. The situation determines the leader. In reality, the real leaders are the people that do the job and very seldom get the credit. I would like to recognize two people I truly believe are leaders: Jayne Mortensen of the Office Pavilion and
Amy Bowman of the Lone Star Girl Scout Council. These two people have given valuable time and limitless energy to make our organization grow to be the best. But they give more than time, they make things happen. From begging to get sponsors for the golf tournament to pushing to get articles to make a great newsletter. And besides doing a great job for IFMA, they are some the best friends a person could hope to make. I would like each of you to take some of your time to thank Jayne and Amy and get to know them. You can bet you'll see them at the next program, and they will be amongst the many IFMA members working hard at the Golf Tournament on April 6th.See you there. Ed.
Termite
swarming season is almost upon us! Termites are important
because they cause millions of dollars of damage to buildings in Texas
every year. Every spring, these insects release new kings and queens
(swarmers) from their subterranean galleries to form new colonies.
This increases termite pressure in Central Texas.
Swarmers have dark bodies and four long many-veined wings of equal length.
Presence of swarmer termites or their dropped wings in a building is a
sign of infestation. Other signs include the presence of worker termites
(creamy colored, soft bodied insects), and dried mud or shelter tubes.
Wood damaged by subterranean terminates will have dirt embedded in the
damaged areas.
If you suspect the presence of termites in your structure or observe
damaged wood, call a professional pest control operator (PCO).
They can provide positive identification and viable options for
controlling the termite infestation.

Ann Morgan, IFMA-Austin's
Association Executive announced her resignation to the Chapter Executive
Committee at the monthly board meeting on Wednesday February 3rd.
The effective date is to be established but will be no later than March 30,
1999. As chapter president, Ed Garcia thanked Ann for stepping forward on
little notice when long time IFMA Association Manager Jack Drummond
announced his resignation in November. The position is currently open and
the Executive Committee is accepting applications for this part-time paid
position.

Some fun facts about our resident Web Master
Nickname? Are you morning or evening person? What kind of car do you drive? What book did you just finish? If spare time should find you,
how would you use it? Life Philosophy? Austinite since? Most embarrassing situation this year. Message to the membership.
Shelli L. Menegos, RPA, FMA Thanks for getting involved!
The lFMA Leadership Conference last month in Houston was a wonderful
learning experience. All of the IFMA-Austin committee
chairs are full of new ideas and ready to put them to work.
As membership chairman, my goal is not
only to increase membership but concentrate on membership retention and
involvement. The two go hand in hand. When a member becomes involved in
the activities of an organization, their membership has more value.
The real challenge is member involvement. We want everyone to know that
we NEED YOU! This is your organization, and you only get out of it what you
put into it. We get busy with our real jobs (where we get paid); therefore,
when forming committees or when volunteers are needed for the golf tournament
or other special events, we sometimes find ourselves relying on those who
have helped in the past only because we don't know who else is available
UNLESS YOU VOLUNTEER.
Biff Beale with Lee's Carpet has stepped forward and agreed to help on the
membership committee. Biff has been membership chair for
ASID (American Society of Interior Designers).
Thank you Biff for your participation. I look forward to working with you.
On the subject of new members, we all know or will meet someone this year
who would like to know more about IFMA and its value to them.
Call me at 837-8545 or bring them to the next program.
Please help me make all our visitors and new members feel welcome.
Our monthly meetings are a time to socialize with friends, but please
take a moment to let these new folks know we are glad they are attending,
and we want them to come back. I look forward to a great year with you!!!!

Chair to formalize action steps. Reports by all committee chairs followed,
most notably from Rick Packham, Vice President. The Golf Tournament
