December business meeting
We all met at Pecan Street and Red River for a meeting of the organization plus a significant
other or two. Joe called the meeting to order promptly at 7 p.m. to say the blessing over the meal
we were about to share. After a bit of luck and careful planning, I was able to be at the head of the
line after an appropriate delay for others to grab the first plate. The food was excellent. I guess I
talked too much since I was unable to get to the assembly line before Joe got up to talk again.
He said thanks to a lot of good people who had worked hard during the past year: Amy
Bowman for her advice and counsel, Judy Balli for her work in membership, Jayne Mortenson for her
excellent newsletter, and Jack Drummond for his outstanding 6 years as our administrator. He then
introduced Ann Morgan, the new administrator, Ed Garcia, the new president, JoAn Reames,
Membership, J. R. Howard, Webmeister, and Tom Cagley, Community Involvement. It was a great
year, and with good participation, we will have another.
Then the fun began. We all went to the auditorium where we were entertained by Esther and
her folks at the Follies-- 6
th Street Christmas Spectacular. We were on the second row which is great
but not too great. People on the front row and aisle seats got more entertainment than we did. I
think audience participation is still a spectator sport. Esther's Follies is one great show. There is only
a nanosecond delay between the skits, songs, gags, magicians, jugglers, and political satire. If you
are not on the edge of your seat, you will miss something. A person with one eye would be under
a severe handicap since there was a significant amount of activity out the window while the main
show was on stage. Well, most of the time it was onstage. Here's a list of some of the acts: Come
on in!, Chi Chi La Bomba!, Boob tube commercial overload, Ray Anderson's Mysterious Origami,
Disorder in the Court, Patsy Clone, and 17 more. This is a show that you can go to every year, and
if anybody comes to visit you, it's a good place to go if they like machine-gun style adult humor. See
their web site at www.esthersfollies.com for more information about this 21-year Austin tradition.
