Sorta Humorus story
Hi Gang: My story isn't as "hair raisin" a Boyd's. But here goes.
The 405th. Wing, in early 56, was having a Gunnery camp at Wendover, Utah in the
F-84F. The 509th. Sqdn. was the first to leave. I had an engine problem and had
to wait till the next day to start out. I tacked onto a two ship from the 510th.
led by a smart assed young Lt. I had never liked him, didn't have a good reason
except his big mouth at the bar. When we got near Whitmam AFB I flamed out. I
said I was going into Whitmam. He said no, you can make Richards Gabour (sp) and
it's not SAC. About two minutes later, he said he had just lost his engine, what
are we gonna do? I told him to just stay on my wing and I would lead him in. He
ask in a panic voice, what if I can't keep up with you. I said "well, let
me know and I will S turn and you can stay with me." I had quite a bit of
dead stick practice as I was the Assist. Maintenance Off. in the 78th. Sqdn.,81st.
Wing, in England when we got the first F-84F's. We had lots of Engine problems
and I had made several on our 6,000' strip at Shepards Grove before they
extended it to 8,000'. Also, at Langley I had several on Maint. Test Hops.
Everything went smooth at "Dicky Goober". I landed about half way down
the R/W as I didn't want him running up my butt. As I went past the end of the
R/W, I saw a Black T-33 with a big Crab painted on the tail. That night at the
club, as we walked in, I saw a "drop dead beautiful" gal standing by
herself. I ask if I could by her a drink, she said, [sic] "let me ask my
Husband". That ended that conversation. Just then a Capt. with a Lanyard on
his shoulder walked up to me and ask if I was Capt. Crocker that had dead
sticked the F-84F that morning. I said yes. He said "well, General Crab,
the ADC Commander wants to talk to you". Oh S__t, I thought I had done a
good job, what the hell did the ADC Cmdr. want with me. We were introduced. He
said Capt. your drinks are on me tonight. I have always been impressed with a
successful "dead stick". But to see you lead a double one and land
half way down the R/W to help the other Pilot, was very impressive. You are to
be commended. WOW!! I didn't have to buy a drink the whole five days I was there
getting my engine fixed. The rest of the trip to Wendover was uneventful.
See you'all at Sabre Reunion next April. Grover C. Crocker (aka "Davy")
