2003 Austin IFMA Golf Tournament -- Title sponsor

Calling all golfers! We still need more teams to sign up. We need 15 more teams and the tournament is only three weeks away.

The 2003 Austin IFMA Golf Tournament will be held Monday, April 28, 2003, at the Nicklaus designed Hills of Lakeway. Conditions are expected to be superb since the Kinko's Senior PGA plays there the following week! This years sponsored charity will be Meals on Wheels. There will be a 12:30 shotgun start with boxed lunches served before. Accent Foods will be providing all of the beer, soft drinks, and water during the golf tournament. Dinner will be served afterwards with a full cash bar available. If you are interested in purchasing tickets specifically for the social event/dinner following the tournament around 5:30 p.m., they will be available for $25.00 at the door.
Anyone interested in setting up a team may contact Charles Dixon, the Golf Tournament Chairman, for additional information.

If you have offered to donate items for the goody bags, Nancy Baroody will accept them at the April 10th luncheon meeting at Embassy Suites.

April Meeting (yes, there is a meeting this month!)

There will be a regular monthly IFMA luncheon meeting this coming Thursday, April 10, 2003 at 11:30 a.m. Please RSVP by April 7th to ensure yourself a seat. Our presenter will be from Micromain and will cover asset management.

March Meeting
Sharon Henson kicked off the March meeting with a few brief presentations from our 2003 IFMA Golf Tournament sponsors. First up was Michael Bradley with Schmidt Electric, next was Bill Farnum with White Construction, then Doug Gavin with Teknion, and Marty Blank with Accent Food Services. National Instruments is also a golf tournament sponsor.

The second half of our meeting was a little different than usual. Each table was provided with a topic and questions for discussion. The topics all came from various Austin IFMA members. We were given about ten minutes to cover the topics. Charles Carpenter then called upon each table to share their ideas with the rest of the meeting's attendees. Here were some of the topics and responses:

Standards in the Workplace
     · National Instruments has standards (i.e. only uses three sizes of workstation panels)
and workstation sizes are determined by function, not title
     · Trilogy also has standards, but uses hard walls for offices rather than workstations.
How did you handle the icy conditions in February?
    · By laying sand at entrances and along roads (this was included in RFP)
    · Dedicated phone messages with instructions
    · Broadcast on TV stations
Do you have any experience with waterless fixtures?
    · The UT Health Science Center in Houston has waterless urinals that work by gravity.
How valuable is CFM certification?
    · Extremely valuable
Should we dedicate an IFMA luncheon meeting to go over the CFM certification?
    · Yes.
    · It would also be a good idea to use valuable member's input when covering topics related to their specialty.
What kind of IFMA Programs do you want to have?
    · Legal issues
    · Formation of a construction team and who should be involved
    · Legislative concerns
    · Breakdown of facility manager functions
    · Safety in the workplace

For our monthly prize of winning back your $20 meeting fee, Charles Carpenter asked the attendees, when and where is World Workplace 2003 being held? You had to know both when and where to win. No one could answer correctly after three tries, so there was no winner for March. The answer is Dallas, Texas from October 19-21, 2003. Mark your calendar!

Luncheon Guest Policy

In an effort to interest potential members in the Austin Chapter, the executive board welcomes our members to invite guests to attend a monthly luncheons for free. As the purpose of the policy to recruit new members, we would like to clarify our guest policy:

    · An RSVP e-mail for the guest must be sent by the Monday deadline. The e-mail must include the person's name, company and contact information. Guests arriving without an RSVP will require payment if seats are available.
    · At the luncheon, the guest needs to leave his/her business card at the registration desk or with our Membership Chair, Nancy Baroody.
    · The guest must be eligible for membership in the Austin Chapter. This would eliminate out-of-town visitors, coworkers from your company or clients of your business unless there is serious interest in joining the Austin Chapter.

As the costs of monthly luncheons are greater than the registration fees, the executive board wants to balance our fiduciary responsibilities with expanding our membership and networking base for the benefit of the Austin Chapter. We appreciate your support and efforts to make the Austin Chapter one of the best chapters in IFMA.

ACP Conference

The Capital of Texas Chapter of the Association of Contingency Planners (ACP) will be hosting a conference entitled "Bridging the Gap" on the afternoon of June 4 at the Thompson Conference Center on the UT Campus.

It is not contingency planning or disaster recovery alone that will save our businesses. It takes an overall knowledge base, which includes Emergency Management, Disaster Recovery, Security Information and Business Continuity Planning! This conference will have sessions that focus on each of these areas.

For more information, visit the ACP website and look for "Bridging the Gap". The ACP offers continuing education credits for attendance.

Learn about water

I've learned that one good turn... gets most of the blankets.

I've learned that whatever hits the fan will not be evenly distributed.

I've learned to not sweat the petty things, and not pet the sweaty things.

I've learned that I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.

I've learned that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon and all the less important ones just never go away. And the real pains in the ass are permanent.
