IFMA Austin, Texas

For those of you who couldn’t attend or participate, the golf tournament was a huge success! Total income before expenses was $27,960. Total expenses were $14,600.34. IFMA-Austin’s net income was $13,359.66 which means we will be able to donate $6,679.83 to The Austin Children’s Shelter! This is over our anticipated donation of $5,000 . . .
Congratulations to everyone who made this event a HUGE success. Martha Horlander—thanks for all your help in collecting goodies for the goodie bags! And we extend our deepest thanks to Charles Dixon who took this project on with open arms.

And, to boot, we are already making plans for our tournament NEXT year!

We can't wait till next year!

Some of the prizes awarded were: a day of offshore fishing in Galveston for 4—donated by Bess Office Services—Tony Bess of YNOT FISHING; 2 passes to the Kinko’s Classic were donated by Charles Dixon; 1 dozen Titleist NXT were donated by Charles Carpenter; and 4 unrestricted movie passes were donated by First American FDS. As well, 15 cases of water (that’s 24 to a case) were donated by Marty Blank with Accent Food Services. IFMA—Austin purchased gift certificates from The Hills of Lakeway—$75 for each member of the First Place Team, $50 per member for the Second Place Team and $35 per member for the Third Place Team. And, IFMA purchased trophies for the First, Second and Third Place Teams from Cedar Park Signs.

We also send Kudos to all of the companies who sponsored various elements of the golf tournament:: Schmidt Electric (Platinum Sponsor), White Construction and National Instruments (Diamond Sponsor), Transwestern, Endeavor, Accent Foods, ABS Companies (Gold Sponsor); Armstrong Moving & Storage (Longest Drive Men); FMG Longest Drive Women’s); Alpha Painting and Herman Miller (Closest to the Pin); Greater Texas Landscape, Boise Workspace, STG and Kiss Cleaning Services (Beverage Carts); and Alpha Painting, Denitech, Southwest Installations, PBS&J, Innovative Interiors, Trilogy, Mannington Commercial Carpets, Intertech, JPM, FMG and Spotless Cleaning (Hole Sponsors).

Schmidt Electric was given a loud round of applause for their continuing support as our number one sponsor. All those who participated in sponsorships were also given kudos.

Maria Hartman announced that Dennis Quade Charity Golf Tournament was coming up in June and would also benefit Austin Children’s Shelter and encouraged all “golf-lovers” to attend the star studded event. Celebrities such as Dennis Quade and James Kaviezel will be there.

BOARD BALLOTS
We will have one new position available on the 2005 Board. The position of secretary is important in taking minutes at all of the Board meetings. As with all of the Board positions, your position on the board and on our Committees require a regular commitment over the next year. The Board meets on the FIRST Thursday of every month to discuss Chapter plans and issues. There are also strategic planning sessions to attend and some other impromptu activities. Board members work closely with IFMA National and all members of the IFMA-Austin. They serve each and every member with a true commitment. As each year progresses, your position as Secretary will move to the position of Treasurer, Vice President, and finally President. If at any time you are unable to continue on the Board for another year, the position will be replaced by ballot. Please submit your nominations to Sharon Henson, Charles Carpenter. Glenda Stubbs or Anita Landwehr.

Directory Update
We know it seems like a hundred years ago when we started planning out our new directories, but let us tell you that the process is long and tedious. Trying to get everyone’s correct Name, Company Information, Addresses, e-mails and phone numbers is just plain WORK. But the good news is that the directory is done and was distributed at the May luncheon on May 13, 2004. Only those who are IFMA-Austin members are eligible to receive a directory. If you still haven’t joined, join now so you can receive one. The bad news is, the directory is never completely up to date since we all change jobs along the way. So we continue the process again next year . . .

Thanks to Herman Miller who donated their resources in making a fabulous directory—and to Kelly Quinney for donating her time to track us all down!

LIGHTNING

  • Is impossible to predict
  • Can kill in any thunderstorm
  • Is still mysterious
  • And, in a thunderstorm many miles away—can still strike you

FLASH/RIVER/FLOODS

  • The top killer in the United States
  • General public doesn’t understand that 1-1/2 ft deep water at 10-15 mph will knock you off your feet
  • If you cross a low water crossing in a vehicle and kill someone else who is in your car, you will go to jail

ICE AND SNOW

  • Get “yer butt off the road, dude”
  • Colder temperatures
  • Freezing rain and drizzle

DID YOU KNOW . . . TORNADOES . . .

  •  Are more common in North and West Texas and spotting them is harder in Central and East Texas because of the hills and trees.
  • Flying debris is what kills people
  • You should remember to stay to the interior of a home or dwelling
  • The tornado presence makes a thunderstorm “severe”
  • Tornadoes are often the LAST part of a thunderstorm

HAIL . . .

  • Hail is associated with a tornado—the larger the hail, the more severe the storm (any hail 3/4” or larger is one consideration for a severe thunderstorm)

TROPICAL CYCLONES

  • Are hurricanes
  • Will affect us—even in Austin—coastal evacuees will crowd our area, highway 37 will be turned one-way to allow more people to evacuate, will clog highways, we can see floods, tornadoes and high winds up to 75 mph.

Mansfield DamOn April 29th, the chapter meet at the Mansfield Dam for a tour of the dam and the hydroelectric plant called Marshall Ford. Long ago, Marshall would help you ford the river a little below the Mansfield Dam.  We had a great turn out and for some the day ended at Oasis.

Chuckles

What if Dr. Seuss wrote technical manuals?

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
And the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report!
If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
And the double-clicking icons put your window in the trash,
And your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash,
Then your situation's hopeless, and your system's gonna crash!
If the label on your cable on the gable at your house,
Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
But your packets want to tunnel to another protocol,
That's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall.
And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,
So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,
Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
"Cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!

When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy on the disk,
And the microcode instructions cause unnecessary RISC,
Then you have to flash your memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM,

Quickly turn off your computer and be sure to tell your mom!
