June 9 Meeting Highlights - Navigating the Permitting Process

Vice President Melissa Whaley-Hawthorne has been with Austin Permit Service since 1986. She has wide ranging experience in all aspects of development management, including building and site plan permit submittal and expedition, site and parking plan analyses, license agreements and easement vacations, and Certificate of Occupancy Inspection Coordination Assistance.

Melissa has obtained Fast Track Certification by the City of Austin Development Review and Inspection Department. She serves on various task forces and committees charged with streamlining the Land Development Process. She has been a strong advocate for responsible, customer service-oriented governmental review.

She successfully represented major Board of Adjustment variance cases for set backs, impervious cover, height, and parking. Melissa participated as a member of Council Member Bob Larson's Site Plan Improvement Process Team. She also was a consultant for Architectural Design Guidelines for the Sixth Street National Register District in 1994 and is an active member of the Austin Real Estate Council. Meredith currently serves on the City of Austin Zoning and Platting Commission.

Robin introduced Melissa Whaley-Hawthorne who gave us a wonderful presentation on the permitting process. She began her presentation discussing the Oasis fire - which prompted us to think about surroundings inside any structure. Had the fire occurred during business hours, it is possible that lives could have been lost because of the limited amount of exits. According to Frank Ivy, the Oasis will rebuild safely under the jurisdiction of the Hudson Bend ordinances. Melissa also discussed PPD Pharmaco who took a flex building and used stringent city codes because they have patients who sleep on their premises during business hours.

She noted that the permitting service is trying to achieve a one-stop shop to eliminate the confusion and delays originally experienced by many citizens.

Also available at the meeting were handouts of:

· Commercial building plan review information
· New Construction and Additional Building Plan Submittal Requirements
· Commercial Remodel/Tenant Finish-out Submittal Requirements
· Quick Turn-around Permit Process
· Change of Use
· Prerequisite Reviews for Commercial Building Permits
· Commercial - Portable/Prefab Buildings · Restricted Smoking Permit Process
· Commercial Swimming Pool Submittal Requirements

INTERTECH FLOORING WINS NATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION
FOR CENTRAL TEXAS PROJECTS

(June 13, 2005 - AUSTIN, Texas) - For the third consecutive year, Austin and San Antonio-based commercial flooring company Intertech Flooring has received national recognition for commercial flooring design excellence. Intertech took top honors in the national StarNet Design Awards for two Central Texas projects.

StarNet, a national commercial flooring cooperative, awarded Intertech first place in the Large Corporate category for the firm's work on the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation in Round Rock. In addition, Intertech received first place in the Unique Installation Challenge category for its work on the Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union Administrative Service Center in Live Oak, Texas.

Intertech's work was selected from more than 100 flooring projects nationwide. Sharing the awards with Intertech are architect/designers Malcolm Chesney, Frederick Liedtka and Debra Babcock with Chesney, Morales Architects & Associates, Inc. for the Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union; and Steven R. Janeway AIA, vice president and director of design for Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc., Dallas, for the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation project.

In its seventh year, the StarNet competition recognizes outstanding creativity in flooring design and the innovative use of floor covering in commercial interiors. Projects are judged on their creative use of flooring, flooring design concept, special challenges and how well the design met client objectives. The awards were presented April 29 at StarNet's annual meeting at Palm Springs, Calif.

"We are honored to work with some of the best architects and designers in the country on these innovative projects," said Bill Imhoff, Intertech Flooring president. "Every exceptional project begins with an exceptional team, and we are pleased to share this recognition with two great teams of clients, architect/designers and flooring vendors who together helped create these award-winning results."
