January Meeting

Charles Carpenter opened the meeting and
mentioned that Sharon Henson was unfortunately quarantined with the flu. He
introduced all past presidents - Ernie Leake '89, John Sutton '92, Amy Bowman
'97, Joseph Siminski '98, Ed Garcia '99, 00, Mike Leach '01, and Linda Delmas
'03. A well deserved round of
applause was given to all
Kelly Quinney asked for volunteers for membership and told everyone to update their IFMA information so that we could publish our directory. Ads are welcomed. Please see the section below for more information.
Charles presented the golf team registration form. He encouraged everyone to reserve April 12th to play golf at the Hills of Lakeway. The course should be in excellent shape right after a major tournament. Our benefactor, Austin Children's Shelter, brought a DVD overview which we'll present at our March luncheon.
Patty May with JPM Enterprises gave away $50 to Debbie Cole and Bill Embrey with Intertech Flooring
gave away $50 cash to Leslie. At the end of the meeting, Linda Delmas won the
free massage provided by Lisa D’Angelo, Wow!
JPM
Enterprises and InterTech flooring sponsored
our meeting. Kelly spoke about all the floor services that JPM provided
and Bill Embery spoke about InterTech. We hope that your company may also want to budget to sponsor
one of our meetings. We are planning to have
sponsorship meetings quarterly - please contact Anita Landwehr at anita.landwehr@eds.com
for details.
2004 GOLF TOURNAMENT
It is time get your team together and sign up for the golf tournament. Our tournaments are a lot of fun and very worthwhile.
TIP: Heel Your Setup (foot position tells all about alignment)
Before you play, check your alignment. Using a 5-iron, set up to a target such as a flat or a tree. Then, without moving your feet, place the club behind your heels. Now walk back to see where the club is pointing. Use the heels rather than the toes because many golfers flare their feet, which skews the toe line. The club should point just left of your target, parallel to the target line. Change targets every five shots and you'll develop a feel for setting up square.
GOLF TRIVIA
What famous golf icon said . . . ". . . I won 19 times including four majors, and my entire winnings were $25,495. That's about $4,000 a year. . . ." "My career winnings were $182,000. . ." (Answer at end of newsletter)
COMMITTEE CHAIRS Still NEEDED!!!!!!!
Mark you calendars for Monday, April 12 again at The Hills of Lakeway. We are beginning the work of raising money, and soliciting team participation and much more. The 2003 event was a big success and we hope that the 2004 will surpass 2003.
Our benefactor for 2004 is the Austin Children's Shelter. At an undisclosed location they house a maximum of 30 children for up to 30 days. The children are given outstanding care until they go to a foster home, back to relatives or returned to their primary care giver. There are some really heart wrenching stories. You can find out more information by checking out their website.
We continue to solicit volunteers to head up committees responsible for the functions required to put this event in motion. Please read the committee positions listed below and respond by return email with your particular category of committee.
Charles Dixon and Steve Crisman plan to make these committees as pain free as possible. We both will help on ALL of the committees and promise to NOT have monthly written reports or any such extra work. Contact Charles Dixon or Steve

TEAMS With assistance from the Publicity Committee secures teams of golfers for participating in the event. This involves telephone and personal contacts with potential player(s), and corporate supporters.

Directory Updates Coming Soon! Don't Snooze & Lose!
It's time to update the IFMA Directory. The directory is
an important tool for the use of members only. Of course, since the last

Miller has graciously volunteered to sponsor the professional creation and
materials for the directory. The
2003-2004 directory is going to be fabulous.
You won't want to miss out on being a part of this book.
If you aren't a member, you need to join before you can receive a

JANUARY IFMA PROGRAM - OSHA FOR FACILITIES MAINTENANCE

Joann Natarajan, Compliance Assistance Specialist in the Austin Area OSHA office, was our guest speaker at the January 8th meeting. She covered How OSHA conducts inspections, how employers are selected, their inspection priorities, inspection types and what to expect if you have an OSHA inspection
The Federal Act of 1970 says the Federalies can't handle a complaint about state offices. There is no regulation on molds. If we receive a complaint, then we will send a letter requesting information about the problem. They conducted 700 investigations on indoor air quality and never found a problem. They will send a letter to the owner to check the problem.
How are employers selected for a visit? There are four categories: imminent danger, a fatality, complaints (referrals), and drive by inspections. About half the inspections are at construction sites and high hazardous industries.. They have about 4 times the national injury rate.
What to expect: The visits are always unannounced. The inspector will present their credentials, explain the purpose of the visit, and request to speak with the person in charge. Open conferences are held and all the records and safety programs are reviewed. Then there's the walkthrough, photographs, sampling, and interviews. After the data is collected, there's an out-brief and if they find a problem, you will be officially notified by mail of any OSHA violations via a citation. You have 15 days to request an informal conference or to contest the findings.
What is OSHA looking for? They will review the laws pertaining to facilities maintenance, electrical, respiratory protection, hazard communication, asbestos, machine guarding, personal protective equipment and the lock out/tag out program. Believe it or not, there is still a lot of asbestos in the work place. Don't be complacent. Extension cords, grounding, breaker boxes, and required clear spaces are all good hunting areas. .

Facilities Jobs!
I was recently contacted by Andy Neill, Account Executive with www.facilitiesjobs.com. For those of you looking for work or hiring, he wanted to get the word out about his company. He mentioned that they currently have a link from the Seattle IFMA Chapter's website as an employment resource for facilities related job seekers.
Facilitiesjobs.com currently allows job seekers to post
FREE resumes, and allows employers to post free job openings as well. It's
really that simple and straightforward. He indicated that they have several
Austin based IFMA members in their resume database, so you may be familiar with
them already.
Please feel free to test drive the system. Or if nothing else, you may have your
members post their openings or review our resume database on our website for
FREE.
If you could utilize some assistance please give me a call or keep Facilitiesjobs.com in mind for your future recruiting efforts.
You can reach Andy at (602) 217-8610.
