"Goodbye"

President's Message - Scott Slaughter ABM Furniture

It was May 2008 “So Scott we want you to be on the board for IFMA”, no big deal I thought. I will volunteer work a couple of golf events attend some lunches, I can do that. It is now August 2011 and I am now President?

I would like to say that I feel privileged and honored to be in this position and look forward to a wonderful year. I need your help, however. I am not a Facility Manager and I would like to ask for your help to make this year successful. I need to know what is challenging you in your facilities. What knowledge would benefit you in your facilities? What do you need to know more about? Also what is not of interest? Is there a particular person or facility you would like to hear from or learn more about.

I would also like to provide an opportunity for more FM’s to obtain their certifications ie FMP,CFM, and SFP. It is my ultimate goal for this year to be educational, beneficial, and worth your time. Come help me make this year a great year for IFMA Austin

FROM THE EDITOR - by Kelly Quinney of The Steam Team

So my big plan for the editorial this quarter was to talk about anything except the unbelievable torching hot weather we've been having in Austin, but I do believe that a portion of my brain has been fried leaving me unable to think about anything else. August 12th marked 27 consecutive days over 100 degrees smashing the previous record of 21. And in just two steamy days, we will break the record of most days over 100 in one year set back in 1925 with 69. And there truly is no end in sight. If you're like me, you approach most situations good or bad with a sense of humor. So on that note, I want to share with you my "It's So Hot" top ten list.......How Hot Is It?

IT'S SO HOT......

10. Your Electric Bill just surpassed your mortgage.

9. Men are having hot flashes too.

8. You cancelled your Hotmail account because you didn't like the name of it.

7.You're kiddie pool is now a bonafied sauna.

6. 90 degrees is a cold front.

5. Your car overheats before you start the engine.

4. The National Weather Service has issued a fat guy in tank top warning.

3. Calista Flockhart was seen eating an ice cream cone. For those of you who've never watched tv, she was Ally McBeal and is possibly the skinniest female on the planet.

2. Your seat belt buckle doubles as a branding iron.

1. Even the sun is drinking cold beer.

Got any other good "It's so hot jokes"? Whoever emails me the best one gets a Snoopy Snow Cone machine.

And on that note, on Sept 6th Austin Water enacts Phase 2 Watering Restrictions. Click here for details.

Community Service Update -

From Todd Coleman Community Service Chair -  "We had a great time and a great turnout (15) for the service day at Sammy’s House on June 9th.  The link to the pictures is http://www.ifma-austin.org/Sammys.htm.We are not planning another event until it cools off, probably October or November.  Would still like to continue to ask for help from members on an individual basis.  I am currently waiting on a new list from Sammy’s House." Thank you to everyone who showed up to volunteer. And a special thank to Todd for putting it all together.

The IFMA Annual Bowl-a-Rama on June 16th was a huge hit! Thank you to all of the people who came out to support the organization and participate in the tournament. And a big thanks to our sponsors! Congratulations to Scott Slaughter and his ABF team for taking 1st place.

BUSINESS SPENDING

Last updated: Jan. 28, 2011

Increased business spending will provide a healthy kick to the economy in 2011. Although companies have already restocked inventories depleted during the recession, investment in equipment and software is likely to match last year’s gain of about 15%. At the same time, spending on buildings will level off, following a three-year steep decline.

Credit a souped-up tax break approved by Congress in early December for some of the increase on equipment spending. Lawmakers OK’d a provision that allows businesses to expense 100% of the cost of assets put into use this year. Of course, some of that spending will be “borrowed” from next year -- moved forward to take advantage of the tax break and therefore reducing growth in 2012 spending.

Although conditions are improving in construction, high vacancy rates for offices, industrial space and retailing will keep a lid on spending for the year. Demand for new space won’t rise until job growth increases substantially, not likely until next year.

Durable goods orders fell in December, reflecting a slower pace in business spending growth in the second half of 2010 than in the first half. Most of the decline came from civilian aircraft. Orders for machinery and motor vehicles were strong, but most sectors were flat or down, including computers and electrical equipment.

10 Tips to Conserve Water

Tips to conserve water and implement innovative water solutions at your facilities

Irrigation Water Sink

  1. 01 Reduce energy use. Water and energy are closely connected. It takes a lot of energy to heat and pump water, and it takes a lot of water to cool systems that generate energy. Energy and water retrofits in your facilities can reduce energy and water consumption by 10 to 50 percent through conservation and operational changes.
  2. 02 Conduct a water audit of your facility, campus, or geography to determine where water is being used and wasted. Buildings consume 20 percent of the world’s available water. Reduce water consumption by maintaining equipment and fixing leaks. Pay special attention to toilets, sprinkler heads and ice machines. A leaky toilet can waste as much as 200 gallons/260 liters of water per day.
  3. 03 Install more efficient equipment, such as HVAC and pumping systems. The HVAC system uses as much as 40 percent of a building’s total water usage. More efficient equipment runs less and runs smarter, and has the added benefit of losing less water to evaporation through cooling towers. On average, applying water-efficient designs and products leads to 15 percent less water use, 10 percent less energy use, and 12 percent lower operating costs (McGraw-Hill Construction, 2009).
  4. 04 Take a look at your technology. Low-flow and dual-flush fixtures are already used in many facilities, but it may be time to evaluate more widespread use as technology has expanded choices, and some prices have decreased. Water-efficient fixtures and faucets are now a prerequisite for LEED® certification.
  5. 05 Rethink your approach to landscaping. Use native drought-tolerant species for most landscaping, along with weather-based or moisture-sensing irrigation controls. Avoid watering during the day or when windy to minimize evaporation losses.
  6. 06 Install a storm water management system to reduce use of municipal water. Water runoff from parking lots and other paved areas can be directed to retention ponds and then used for irrigation. Using water runoff also avoids sending water to the storm sewer system.
  7. 07 Capture savings. Rainwater and snow melt can be captured from roofs, and then filtered, disinfected and stored for use to flush toilets and urinals in buildings.
  8. 08 Consider using geothermal energy and ground source heat pumps to heat and cool your building. Heat pumps can reduce energy costs by 25 to 40 percent over conventional systems. They eliminate cooling towers and thus save the thousands of gallons of water those towers would lose to evaporation.
  9. 09 Use education and communications tools such as on-site kiosks, dashboards and training modules that teach and engage building occupants to conserve water and energy. Engage occupants by educating them about water stewardship, suggesting choices such as replacing plastic water bottles with reusable containers. It takes 1.85 gallons of water to manufacture the plastic for the average .5-liter commercial bottle of water.
  10. 10 Harness the heat of the sun. A solar thermal system can provide hot water for your facility. This on-site renewable energy system means you use less power from the grid or gas, while providing hot water for boiler preheating, swimming pools and domestic water uses. It can even be used for solar cooling, through which hot water is used to power absorption chillers. More efficient heating means less water used for cooling — a double win.

Austin Water to Enact Stage 2 Watering Restrictions on September 6th

ONE DAY WATERING ONLY (Austin) - Beginning Tuesday, September 6, Austin Water will enact Stage 2 Mandatory Watering Restrictions due to the exceptional drought in Central Texas.

Stage 2 Watering Restrictions are in line with the City's Drought Contingency Plan which states, in part, that the City Manager may order additional water restrictions when the combined lake storage levels of Lakes Travis and Buchanan reaches 900,000 acre-feet. It is anticipated that the trigger will be reached next week. The City of Austin believes it is necessary to implement additional restrictions to help ensure adequate water supply during the drought. To ensure that both residential and commercial customers follow restrictions, Austin Water staff will begin stepped-up enforcement. Violations of mandatory watering restrictions will result in an official warning followed by a citation if the violation is not corrected. Citations will be issued in Municipal Court with fines set during Stage 2 at $475.

Stage 2 Includes:

·         Watering allowed 1 day per week for all Austin Water customers

·         Hand-watering allowed anytime

·         No automatic-irrigation after 10 a.m. on designated watering day

·         Vehicle washing on designated day before 10 a.m.

·         No charity carwashes

·         No automatic fill valves for pools or ponds

·         No outdoor fountains except to provide aeration for aquatic life

·         No water to be served at restaurants unless requested

·         No washing of sidewalks, driveways, parking areas or other paved areas

To report water waste, residents should call 3-1-1. For more information on Stage 2 Restrictions and water conservation programs, visit WaterWiseAustin.org.
